Lodhurva Jain Temple, also written as Lodhruva or Lodarva, is one of the important heritage and religious attractions near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Located around 15–16 km from Jaisalmer city, Lodhurva was once the ancient capital of the Bhati Rajputs before the capital was shifted to Jaisalmer in 1156 CE. Today, the village is known for its beautifully restored Jain temple, ancient ruins and peaceful desert surroundings.
History of Lodhurva Jain Temple
Lodhurva was an important settlement and the capital of the Bhati Rajput rulers before the establishment of Jaisalmer. Historical accounts associate the development of the town with Rawal Deoraj, while Rawal Jaisal later shifted the capital to Jaisalmer in 1156 CE. The exposed location of Lodhurva made it vulnerable to invasions, and the old city gradually declined.
The Jain temple is dedicated to Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara of Jainism. The original temple tradition dates back many centuries, while the present structure has been restored and renovated over time. Its yellow sandstone architecture reflects the remarkable craftsmanship associated with western Rajasthan.
One of the most attractive features of the temple is its finely carved entrance torana, along with detailed jali work, sculptures and ornamental stone carvings. The temple complex also features the famous Kalpavriksha, a sacred wish-fulfilling tree represented in artistic form.
Lodhurva is also associated with local stories and legends, including the popular tale of Mumal and Mahendra, which has been preserved in the folklore and songs of the region.
Architecture of Lodhurva Jain Temple
The temple is especially attractive for visitors interested in history, religion and architecture. The structure uses golden-yellow sandstone and features detailed carvings, decorative arches and finely worked stone screens. The craftsmanship gives the temple a delicate appearance despite being built from stone.
The black stone image of Parshvanath is the main attraction inside the shrine. Visitors can also admire the peaceful courtyard and the surrounding remains of ancient Lodhurva. The combination of temple architecture and desert ruins makes this place different from the busy attractions inside Jaisalmer Fort.
